How to Set Up a Shared Family Budget on Your Phone (Step by Step)

How to Set Up a Shared Family Budget on Your Phone
The hardest part of budgeting together isn't the maths. It's getting started, and then both of you actually using it. This guide walks through setting up a shared envelope budget on your phones in about 15 minutes, using FamilyJar. The same steps apply to most envelope apps.
Before you start: have a rough idea of your monthly take-home pay and your fixed bills (rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, loans). Estimates are fine. You'll adjust after the first month.
Step 1: Install the app and choose language and currency
Install FamilyJar from the App Store or Google Play. One of you can use an iPhone and the other an Android phone; you'll share the same budget. On first launch, confirm your language and currency (the app suggests them from your phone's settings) and sign in with your email.
Step 2: Create your family (or go solo)
The first setup step asks whether to create a family or join one. Whoever starts creates it. Don't want to share? You can budget on your own too, with personal categories only. Plenty of people do.
Step 3: Invite your partner
Enter your partner's email address. They receive an invitation with a code, install the app, and enter the code under "Have an invite code?". If the email doesn't arrive, you can share the code directly.
Once they've joined, you both see the same shared budget, live, each on your own phone.
Step 4: Pick your categories (envelopes)
Start with the starter categories the app suggests and edit them. A good first set for a household:
- Shared: groceries, housing, utilities, transport, kids, eating out, household.
- Personal: each of you gets one or two, like "my spending money" or a hobby. Only the owner sees these.
Keep it short at first. Eight to twelve categories beats thirty you never look at. Our family budget categories list has more ideas, and envelope categories for couples covers what to share and what to keep personal.
Step 5: Choose the right budget type for each category
Every category has a budget type:
- Monthly: a fresh allowance every month. Groceries, fuel, eating out.
- Yearly: enter the whole year's amount once, for car insurance or annual subscriptions, and the app works out what to set aside each month. Add the bills it covers with the month each falls due, and you'll see what's due now.
- Rolling: never resets. Set aside a fixed amount every month and let it build, for the big holiday or the next car.
This one step prevents most budget blow-ups. The sinking fund calculator helps you size the yearly ones.
Step 6: Add your income
Record your take-home pay so the app can show what's left to budget, your monthly surplus and your savings rate.
Step 7: Log your first expense
Add something you bought today. Do it now, because the first entry is the one people skip. Two quick ways:
- Tap +, enter the amount and pick the category.
- Or open the assistant and type "45 on groceries". It prepares the expense, and you tap Confirm.
Step 8: Add a savings goal
Create your first goal, usually an emergency fund. If you have several goals, put them in order: money goes to the first until it's done, then the next. Not sure about the order? Read which savings goal to fund first.
Step 9: Agree on two habits
The setup is done. What makes it work is two small habits:
- Whoever pays, logs it, on the spot.
- A short check-in. Ten minutes a week, or a monthly review, to see what's left and adjust.
Your first month: expect to adjust
Your first budget will be wrong, and that's normal. Groceries will be higher than you thought, something will be missing. Move money between envelopes when you need to, note what surprised you, and set better numbers for month two. By month three, it mostly runs itself.
