Log Expenses by Just Typing: FamilyJar's Free AI Budget Assistant

Log Expenses by Just Typing

Every budgeting app has the same weak spot: you have to enter what you spent. It sounds like nothing. But it's the step people skip on a busy day, and after a week of skipping, the budget no longer matches reality and quietly gets abandoned.

We looked at how people use FamilyJar and saw exactly that. Plenty of people sign up, and a surprising number never log a single expense. So we made that step as short as we could.

FamilyJar now has a built-in AI assistant. You write what happened, the way you'd text your partner, and it does the form-filling for you.

How it works

Open the assistant and type:

"45 on groceries"

The assistant figures out the amount, finds your Groceries category and uses today's date. It doesn't save anything yet. Instead it shows you a card:

  • Expense: 45.00
  • Category: Groceries (shared)
  • Date: today

You check it and tap Confirm. That's the whole flow, and it takes a few seconds.

It works the same way for:

  • Income: "Salary came in, 3,200"
  • Savings: "Put 200 into the vacation fund"

You can also ask about your month: "How much did we spend in October?" or "What's our savings rate this month?"

Why there's a Confirm button

We could have let the assistant save entries on its own. We chose not to, for three reasons:

  1. Language models make mistakes. One might read "45" as "450" or pick the wrong envelope. The card shows you exactly what will be saved, so a mistake gets caught before it reaches your budget.
  2. It doesn't guess. If you have both "Food" and "Food – eating out", the assistant asks which one you mean instead of picking one.
  3. No duplicates. If the connection drops and you tap Confirm twice, the entry is still saved once.

The assistant can't delete anything, change categories or touch your family settings. Those stay in the app, under your control.

Free, and in your language

The assistant is free for every FamilyJar user, not a Pro feature. Write to it in English, Polish, German, Japanese or any of the other languages FamilyJar supports, and it answers in the same language.

Still no bank login

FamilyJar has never asked for your bank credentials, and the assistant doesn't change that. It works only with what you enter in FamilyJar. To answer you, your message and the relevant budget figures are sent to an AI model provider. We route those requests only to providers that don't retain them or train on them. The details are in our privacy policy.

For couples, it removes the "I'll add it later"

Budgeting as a couple only works if both of you see the same numbers. That breaks down when one person pays and means to enter it later. With the assistant, whoever paid logs it on the spot, in one line, and the shared envelopes stay current for both of you.

Already using Claude or ChatGPT?

If you'd rather talk to your budget from an assistant you already use, FamilyJar also works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients. See Talk to your family budget or go straight to the Connect page.
