How to Connect Your Budget to Claude or ChatGPT (MCP): Official vs Community Servers

How to Connect Your Budget to Claude or ChatGPT

"How much did we spend on eating out this quarter?" is exactly the kind of question AI assistants are good at, as long as they can see your numbers. The standard way to give them that access is the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open protocol that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other assistants call tools from other apps.

If you search for "YNAB MCP" or "Monarch MCP", you'll find a dozen GitHub projects and very few official answers. This guide explains the difference between official and community MCP servers, what each one actually gets access to, and how to choose a setup you'd be comfortable using for family money.

MCP in plain English

An MCP server is a small adapter between your AI assistant and an app. It publishes a list of actions, like "list categories" or "add a transaction", and the assistant calls them when your question needs them.

What matters for your budget is three things:

  1. Who runs the server: the app's own company (official) or someone else (community).
  2. How it signs in: a proper sign-in screen (OAuth), a personal access token, or your actual password.
  3. What it can do: read only, or also change your data.

Official vs community servers

Official serverCommunity server
Built and maintained byThe app's companyAn independent developer
How you connectUsually paste a URL and sign inUsually install it locally and edit a config file
CredentialsOAuth sign-in; you never handle a raw keyPersonal access token or your password, kept on your computer
PermissionsDefined by the app (often read and write are separate)Whatever the token or password allows, often everything
When the app's API changesUpdated by the appDepends on the maintainer

Community servers aren't bad. Many are well written, open source and auditable. But you're trusting a stranger's code with a credential that usually unlocks your whole account, so it's worth reading the README before installing one.

YNAB

As of mid-2026 there is no official YNAB MCP server. YNAB's developer documentation lists community-built tools, and there are several MCP servers on GitHub.

What they have in common:

  • You create a Personal Access Token in YNAB's developer settings and give it to the server. Some store it in your system keychain, others in an environment variable.
  • The token has full access to your account. Some servers expose write tools, such as creating transactions or moving money between categories. Others deliberately stay read-only. One read-only project points out in its README that YNAB has no bulk undo for changes an assistant makes.
  • Most run locally and are set up for Claude Desktop or other desktop clients.

If you use YNAB: prefer a read-only server unless you really need writes, keep the token in your keychain, and revoke it in YNAB's settings when you stop using it.

Monarch Money

Monarch's situation is less clear. Independent MCP directories report that Monarch built an official MCP connector and then paused it around August 2026, citing a data-portability question with a partner. Check Monarch's help center or Settings → Integrations for the current status before relying on it.

Meanwhile, several community servers exist. Several popular ones sign in with your Monarch email and password, sometimes together with your two-factor secret, stored in a local config file. That works, but it means a file on your computer holds everything needed to log in to your financial account. If you go this way, keep that file out of backups and synced folders.

FamilyJar

FamilyJar has an official, hosted MCP server:

https://mcp.familyjar.app/mcp
  • No install, no keys. Add it as a custom connector in Claude, or as a remote MCP server in ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code or Codex. A browser window opens, you sign in with FamilyJar's email code, and approve access.
  • Read and write are separate permissions. A read-only connection can't change anything.
  • Writes are previewed first. When the assistant adds an expense, income or a savings payment, it gets a preview to show you. Nothing is saved until you confirm. A retry after a dropped connection doesn't create a duplicate.
  • No family administration. An assistant can't invite or remove family members or delete categories.
  • No bank login anywhere in the chain. FamilyJar never connects to your bank, so the assistant only sees what you've entered.

Setup steps for each client are on the Connect page. For examples of what to ask, see Talk to your family budget.

Don't use Claude or ChatGPT? You may not need MCP at all

MCP is for people who already live in an AI assistant. If you just want to log spending by typing, FamilyJar has a built-in assistant that's free for everyone: write "45 on groceries", tap Confirm. There's nothing to connect.

A quick safety checklist

Before connecting any budget to an AI assistant:

  1. Prefer official servers with OAuth sign-in over pasting tokens or passwords into config files.
  2. Start read-only. Turn on writes only if you'll actually use them.
  3. Make sure writes need your confirmation, or at least that you can review what the assistant changed.
  4. Know how to disconnect: revoke the token in the app, or remove the connector in the assistant.
  5. Remember where your data goes. Whatever the assistant reads is processed by the AI provider (Anthropic, OpenAI and so on) under its terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does YNAB have an official MCP server?+

Not as of mid-2026. There are several community-built YNAB MCP servers that use a YNAB personal access token.

Does Monarch Money work with Claude?+

Monarch has had an official MCP connector, but independent directories reported it as paused from around August 2026. Community servers exist; several sign in with your Monarch email and password. Check Monarch's help center for the current status.

Is it safe to connect my budget to an AI assistant?+

It can be, if you use an official server with a proper sign-in, start read-only, and require confirmation for any changes. Avoid storing your bank or budget password in plain config files.

How do I connect FamilyJar to Claude or ChatGPT?+

Add https://mcp.familyjar.app/mcp as a custom connector or remote MCP server, then sign in with FamilyJar when the browser opens. Step-by-step instructions are on familyjar.app/connect.

Do I need Claude or ChatGPT to use AI with FamilyJar?+

No. The FamilyJar app has its own built-in assistant that is free for everyone.
