Splitwise vs FamilyJar: Splitting Expenses or Budgeting Together?

Splitwise vs FamilyJar

Splitwise is the app everyone reaches for when money is shared: roommates, group trips, a dinner bill. Many couples start there too, logging who paid for the groceries and settling up at the end of the month.

It works, but it answers a different question from a budget. Splitwise answers "who owes whom?" A budget answers "how much do we have for groceries this month, and how much is left?" For a couple or family running one household, that second question usually matters more.

Splitwise details are from its app listings and 2026 reviews; prices vary by country. Check the app for current terms.

What each app is for

Splitwise keeps a running balance between people. You add an expense, choose who paid and how to split it, and Splitwise tells everyone what they owe. You settle up in cash or through a payment app.

FamilyJar is an envelope budget for one household. You decide together how much each part of life gets (groceries, rent, fun, the holiday fund), then log spending against those envelopes. Shared categories are visible to the whole family, and personal ones stay private to each partner.

When Splitwise is the right tool

  • You share costs with people outside your household: roommates, friends, a trip.
  • You and your partner keep money completely separate and just want to even out shared costs.
  • You need a clear record of who paid and who still owes what.

When a shared budget works better

  • You've combined finances, fully or partly. Once groceries come out of a shared pot, there's nothing to settle. What you need to know is whether the pot will last the month.
  • You keep tripping over the daily limit. Couples logging everyday spending can hit Splitwise's free cap quickly.
  • You want to plan, not just record. Splitwise tells you what happened. A budget tells you what you can still spend, and saves for the bills that aren't monthly.
  • You want some privacy. Personal categories let each partner keep their own spending money without logging every coffee for the other to see. More on that in his and hers budgets.

Can you use both?

Yes, and plenty of households do. Use FamilyJar for the household (your shared and personal envelopes) and Splitwise for everything outside it: the ski trip with friends, the shared flat at university, the dinner with another couple.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Splitwise good for couples?+

It works well for couples who keep their money separate and just want to even out shared costs. Couples who share a household budget usually need category budgets instead of IOUs, which Splitwise doesn't offer.

Does Splitwise have a daily limit?+

Yes. Free users can add only a limited number of expenses per day, reported in 2026 as about four. Splitwise Pro removes the limit.

Can FamilyJar track who owes whom?+

No. FamilyJar is a shared budget: shared spending comes from shared envelopes, so there's nothing to settle. For costs shared with people outside your household, Splitwise is the better tool.

Can I use Splitwise and FamilyJar together?+

Yes. Many households budget at home with FamilyJar and use Splitwise for trips, roommates or friends.
