Goodbudget vs FamilyJar: Which Envelope Budgeting App Is Better for Couples?

Goodbudget vs FamilyJar
If you've decided on envelope budgeting and you're doing it as a couple, two apps come up again and again: Goodbudget, the long-established digital envelope app, and FamilyJar, built specifically for couples and families.
Both use envelopes, both have free plans, and both let two people work from one budget. The differences are in privacy between partners, how envelopes refill, and what you pay. This comparison tries to be fair. Goodbudget is a good app, and for some households it's the better choice.
Goodbudget's plan details below come from its 2026 pricing and reviews. Check goodbudget.com for the current limits.
The short version
- Choose Goodbudget if you want a web app on your computer, automatic bank import (Premium, US banks), or a long track record.
- Choose FamilyJar if you want shared and private envelopes inside one family budget, envelopes for yearly bills and long-term saving that work the way those bills do, and no bank connection at all.

Where Goodbudget is stronger
- A web app. If you like budgeting at a computer, Goodbudget has a browser version. FamilyJar is mobile only.
- Optional bank import. Premium can pull transactions from US banks. FamilyJar deliberately never connects to a bank.
- Track record. It has been around for over a decade, with plenty of guides and a large community.
Where FamilyJar is stronger
Privacy between partners
In a shared Goodbudget household, everyone works from the same set of envelopes. FamilyJar has two kinds of categories in one budget: shared ones (groceries, rent, the car) that the whole family sees, and personal ones (your coffee, your hobby, your partner's birthday present) that only you see. It's one budget, but not everything is everyone's business. We wrote about why that matters in envelope categories for couples.
Envelopes for bills that aren't monthly
FamilyJar has three kinds of envelope:
- Monthly: a fresh allowance each month (groceries, fuel).
- Yearly: enter the year's figure once, for insurance or a subscription, and the app works out what to set aside each month and shows which bills fall due this month.
- Rolling: never resets, for the big holiday or the next car.
That covers the irregular expenses that break most budgets without workarounds.
Logging is quick, without a bank connection
The usual argument for bank import is that typing is tedious. FamilyJar's free built-in assistant makes it short: type "45 on groceries", check the card it prepares, tap Confirm. More here.
One subscription for the family
FamilyJar Pro covers everyone in the family, so one partner's subscription unlocks it for both of you.
Which one should you pick?
- You budget at a desk, or want US bank import: Goodbudget.
- You and your partner want one budget with room for private spending, and you'd rather keep your bank login to yourselves: FamilyJar.
- You're on the free plan either way: try both for a month. Both are free to start, and the right app is the one you'll both open every day.
